Balloons carrying thousands of packs of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was forced to close for hours when dozens of them entered the country's airspace.
Air Travel Interruptions
The temporary shutdown led to 30 flight cancellations disrupting thousands of passengers, with airport representatives alerting that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Authorities reported that multiple atmospheric balloons were detected entering Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with two balloons ending up directly over the airport's airspace.
As many as 14 of the atmospheric instruments sent during the weekend floated over the metropolitan zone, which is home to Lithuania's capital city and close to the Belarusian boundary.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
A minimum of 11 balloons carrying 18,000 packs of black-market cigarettes have since been recovered, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to border security officials.
International Illegal Trade
Although causing problems, representatives clarified that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - Belarusian smoking products - are not unusual in the Baltic region and Poland."
Since January, over five hundred weather devices have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been noted during the prior year.
Cross-Border Effects
Meanwhile, the border area of Poland, which likewise adjoins Belarus, has registered in excess of numerous instances in which contraband was flown from its neighbor using the weather devices.
Criminal Methodology
When questioned about why criminals use a technique that proves especially affected by weather elements rather than easier to manage drones, representatives elaborated that "Atmospheric equipment are basic instruments used by contraband transporters - they are more economical than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Representatives further stated that "Our services' aim is to confiscate the maximum possible amounts of illegal goods and to apprehend coordinators and involved individuals so that these practices become unprofitable and create minimal risk to civil aviation."
International Concerns
These airspace violations occur during a period of growing anxiety in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have resulted in flight interruptions across the continent.
Parallel situations in adjacent nations have led European authorities to fast-track conversations about enhancing aerial security throughout the continent.
