Wimbledon will follow the American and Aussie Opens in implementing replay technology.
Video review systems will be launched at Wimbledon for the 2025 edition.
Athletes will gain the option to challenge specific rulings from the chair umpire, following the protocol already in place at each of the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.
This technology will be operational on Centre Court and the number one court throughout the tournament and on the remaining featured courts when they are staging singles matches.
This step follows just a season following the All England Club implemented electronic line calling, which brought an end to the 147-year tradition of line officials.
What Can Be Reviewed?
Competitors cannot to dispute the accuracy of the ELC system, but they can request the official to review other situations, including:
- If a ball has bounced twice.
- Whether a shot touched an rival's racket or person during play.
- Possible interference end of a rally.
Notably, there will be no cap on the amount of challenges a player can request.
Case in Point
An illustrative example occurred in Indian Wells last week, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the review system against Jack Draper.
The British player admitted it was a tough call for the umpire, but believed his opponent had "used the regulations effectively."
The umpire viewed a video and determined Draper was responsible for hindrance, awarding the point to his opponent.
Broader Adoption
This technology aren't new for major tournaments. The system has been in use at the American major for two years and the Aussie Open this year.
Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the ATP circuit plans to have the system implemented at all of its events.
Further Updates
Another change at The Championships this year involves the addition of graphical cues on displays to support the verbal announcements from the ELC system.
This addresses instances where the crowd have sometimes been uncertain whether a shot was out or in.
In other news, with precisely a century of days to go until the beginning of the Championships, the AELTC have further announced an increase in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
